Presence in doubt: Encountering the risen Christ
Thomas has often been called “the doubter”, but his story is full of grace. When the risen Jesus first appeared to the disciples, Thomas wasn’t there. He struggled to believe their testimony and asked for proof. Many of us know this tension of longing for God’s presence but wrestling with doubt, disappointment or unanswered questions.
Notice how Jesus responds. He doesn’t shame or reject Thomas. Instead, He comes back a week later, specifically for him. “Put your finger here,” He says, offering His wounds as proof of His love. Jesus doesn’t run from our doubts; He meets us in them.
For Thomas, it wasn’t a clever argument that changed everything. It was an encounter with the risen Christ. Presence transforms doubt into faith, and skepticism into surrender. Thomas moves from questions to the deepest confession of faith: “My Lord and my God!”
This is hope for us. Doubt does not disqualify you. God is not afraid of your questions. He longs to meet you in them, not with condemnation but with presence. Like Thomas, we are invited to experience Jesus personally and let His nearness reshape our hearts.
Reflection:
Where am I wrestling with doubt or uncertainty in my faith? How might I invite Jesus into that place, trusting Him to meet me there?
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for meeting me in my doubts. Help me to encounter you in real ways, to trust that you are near, and to allow your presence to transform my heart into deeper faith. Amen.
