Free From the Need to Be Liked
DEVOTIONAL
How much of your life is quietly run by the question, "What will they think of me?"
It is one of the most common chains and one of the most socially acceptable. The need to be liked rarely looks like bondage. It looks like being nice, being agreeable, keeping the peace. But underneath, it can be exhausting. You shape your words, your choices, even your opinions around an audience, and you never quite get to rest in who you actually are.
Paul names it without flinching. He asks, " Am I trying to win the approval of people, or of God? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. He had discovered something that set him free to live boldly: you cannot be a people-pleaser and a God-pleaser at the same time. You will always end up serving one master at the expense of the other.
The deeper issue is not other people. It is where we go looking for our worth. Proverbs says the fear of man is a snare, a trap. When the opinions of others carry the weight that only God's approval was ever meant to carry, every room becomes a test, and every relationship becomes a performance.
But here is the freedom. You already have the only approval that ultimately matters. Your Father has accepted you in Christ, fully and finally, and nothing in any room can add to it or take it away. When that settles in you, you stop needing people to be your mirror, and for the first time, you can actually love them instead of managing them.
Free from the verdict of the crowd, you can finally run your own life. And that raises a question we will face tomorrow: are you even running your race, or someone else's?
REFLECTION
Whose approval are you actually living for? What would change if you truly believed your Father's approval was already settled?
FREEDOM STEP
Make one small choice today purely before God rather than for the crowd: an honest word, a kind no, a step you have been avoiding because of what people might think.
PRAYER
Father, I am tired of performing for approval I already have in You. Thank You that You have fully accepted me in Christ. Free me from the fear of what people think, so I can love them honestly and live before You alone. Amen.
