The Lie That Your Struggle Is Your Identity

Of all the lies that keep people bound, this is the heaviest: the belief that what you struggle with is who you are.

There is a world of difference between "I did something" and "I am something." A person who eats one unhealthy meal is not an unhealthy person; they are a healthy person who ate badly. But somewhere along the way, many of us let our failures hand us a name. I am an addict. I am an anxious person. I am the angry one, the weak one, the one who always ruins it. And once a struggle becomes an identity, we stop fighting a behaviour and start defending a self.

Jesus said you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Not information. Truth about who you actually are. The enemy of your freedom is not mainly your sin. It is the lie that wraps your sin around your identity until you cannot tell them apart.

Paul shows us the way through. Put off the old self and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness. Notice he speaks of it as a change of clothing, not a change of species. The struggle is something you can take off. It was never the real you. In Christ, the real you is righteous, loved, and free, and that is the self you get to put on each morning.

So when the old name whispers today, you do not have to argue with it or earn your way out of it. You simply tell the truth: that is not who I am. The behaviour does not get the final word on your identity. Jesus does.

But there is one place this identity battle gets especially sneaky. Tomorrow we expose it: the quiet slavery of needing other people's approval.

REFLECTION

What name has a struggle given you? What does Jesus call you instead?

Each time an old label surfaces today, answer it out loud with the truth: "That is something I face, not who I am. I am free in Christ."

PRAYER

Father, forgive me for letting my struggles tell me who I am. Thank You that in Jesus, my identity is settled: righteous, loved, free. Help me take off the old name and put on the new self You have given me. Amen.
