You Can't Sin-Manage Your Way to Freedom
DEVOTIONAL
Here is a hard truth that will set you free: you will never break a chain by staring at it.
So many sincere believers pour all their energy into not sinning. They monitor, resist, white-knuckle, and brace. Their whole spiritual life becomes a defensive crouch against the thing they are trying to stop. And the strange part is, the harder they focus on not doing it, the louder it seems to shout. What you fixate on, you feed.
I learned this in an everyday way, trying to get healthier. The more I told myself, "Do not eat the junk," the more I wanted it. What actually changed me was not more willpower against the bad. It was giving myself to something better. The energy I used to spend resisting, I started spending on a higher pursuit, and the old pull quietly lost its grip.
This is the secret hiding in plain sight in the New Testament. Paul does not say "stop offering yourself to sin" and leave it there. He says offer yourself to righteousness instead. Set your mind on things above. The way out of an old pattern is rarely to fight it head-on. It is to become so engaged with a greater love that the lesser one loses its power.
Freedom is not the absence of the old thing. It is the presence of a better thing. You cannot empty a heart; you can only fill it, and a heart full of God has little room left for the old master.
So stop staring at the chain. Lift your eyes to the One who already broke it, and give yourself to Him. Tomorrow, we go after the lie underneath the struggle, the one that whispers the struggle is who you are.
REFLECTION
How much of your energy goes into resisting the old, compared to pursuing the new? What is one higher pursuit God is drawing you towards?
FREEDOM STEP
Choose one good thing to lean into today (worship, serving, a step of love) and pour into it the energy you would normally spend resisting. Watch the old pull weaken.
PRAYER
Father, I have spent so long fighting what I do not want. Today I turn and give myself to what I do want: You. Fill my heart so full of Your life that the old master finds no room. Amen.
