People of Peace

The term “person of peace” (or “man/house of peace”) originates in both Matthew 10 and Luke 10, where Jesus instructs his disciples—first the Twelve, then the Seventy-Two—to seek out households that welcome them.

These persons or homes become key foundations for establishing new spiritual communities. They are not merely friendly contacts; they are those whom God has already prepared to receive the Gospel, extend hospitality, and help launch a church in their place.

Jesus’ mission strategy emphasizes relationship over resource accumulation. By going out “needy”—without purse, bag, or sandals—his followers learned dependency on God and on those who would welcome them. Hospitality became the litmus test: whoever opened their home and met their needs signaled a person or house of peace.

Once identified, disciples were to settle in that home, eat what was set before them, minister in the Kingdom, and bless that household. This approach was counterintuitive to a door-to-door Gospel mandate, but it made multiplication possible. Investing deeply in a few selfless, community-minded individuals equips them to coach and mature new believers long after traveling missionaries have moved on.

When rejection came, Jesus taught healthy boundaries—dusting feet and moving on—trusting God to prepare the next field. Our greatest joy remains not in visible results, but in knowing our names are written in Heaven and that God’s harvest will endure.

Questions to consider:

  • Who in your extended circles (work, neighborhood, social groups) exhibits genuine care for others’ welfare?
  • How might you begin a spiritual conversation that reveals openness without overwhelming them?
  • What would it look like to invest deeply in one or two people rather than seeking to reach many superficially?
  • Have you experienced “dusting your feet” in ministry?
  • What did God teach you in the process?
