Make Disciples That Make Disciplesნიმუში

Day 14- Duck Duckling Discipleship
Have you ever watched a mother duck with her ducklings?
They move in a perfect single file, each one stepping into the space just vacated by the bird in front. Only the lead duckling truly watches the mother. The next duckling watches the first, and so on. In disciple-making, you don’t need to be the “mother duck” to lead someone else—you just need to be one step ahead.
In the duck/duckling model of disciple-making, a new believer can share what they’ve just learned, a seasoned follower can point to deeper truths, and each duckling both learns and teaches as it follows.
This simple pattern reminds us that discipleship is contagious: each follower becomes a leader in turn.
Paul’s plea in Philippians 3:17 is clear:
“Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.”
He positions himself as one who is one step closer to Christ. By imitating his pursuit of Jesus, we learn to echo his rhythms of worship, service, and sacrifice.
Putting this metaphor into action helps us grow both as learners and as leaders:
1.) Identify one truth you’ve recently discovered in Scripture and share it with a friend.
2.) Invite someone to observe your daily rhythms—prayer, Bible reading, worship—and discuss what they notice.
3.) Ask a mentor or peer to point out areas where you’re one step ahead, then look for someone one step behind you.
4.) Create a “single-file” accountability group where each person reports both wins and struggles.
5.) Celebrate progress in small steps, knowing every duckling eventually becomes part of the lead line.
Questions to consider:
- Are there any “ducklings” following you right now?
- What ducklings are you following?
- Who are they following?
- How can you lean more fully on Christ’s grace as your power source?
