The Good Portion

During His earthly ministry, Jesus talked to women about their priorities. He told His friends Mary and Martha what was necessary in life.

Every time I read this account I find myself feeling sorry for Martha. I am often like her, and I feel her pain. She’s working hard, doing hospitality, enabling ministry. But we shouldn’t get sidetracked—the point is what Mary is doing. Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to His teaching, and Jesus tells her she has chosen the good portion that will not be taken away.

Mary has chosen Jesus over completing her tasks. She has chosen Jesus over pleasing or impressing others with her clean house and good food. She has chosen Jesus over everything else that is tugging at her heart and her time. Mary knows what’s necessary. She wants to know Jesus. Mary chose Jesus as her portion because she knew that fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore were found only in knowing Him.

Don’t miss the impact of this passage: Jesus was commending a woman, 2,000 years ago in the Middle East, for sitting under His teaching. He wants women to be serious students of the Bible, studying it and hearing it taught. Godly women choose the good portion by going to Jesus in His Word. And Jesus said this good portion will not be taken away. One day the food will be gone. The house will deteriorate. Our bodies will get sick and die and corrode in the ground. But knowing Jesus can never be taken away.

Are you choosing what can never be taken away? Do you choose Jesus in the morning when there are dishes to wash or emails to send? Do you choose Him over Instagram and TV? Do you choose Him over exercise or coffee with friends? Mary chose the good portion. How about you? Do you want to know Jesus day by day?

The Good Portion : Scripture

As women in the modern world we often juggle the responsibilities of work and school and home. Sometimes life is overwhelming and sometimes it is just mundane. But the God who sent His Son into the world to rescue sinners gives meaning to both the overwhelming and the mundane. He created us to enjoy knowing Him. In knowing God through the Scriptures we find meaning and joy!
