Majesty

God’s power and divinity can be seen in creation. On a family trip to Ireland a scenic drive took us along the winding coastal roads of Donegal County. We had never seen so many different shades of green. Each turn of the highway brought more picture-perfect scenes of farmhouses tucked into rolling hills dipping down into the sea, until the road ended at an enormous cliff covered in layers of emerald moss and purple heather. Through the rain and blustery cold, we hiked the lush bluff until we had the best view. Fear from the dizzying heights turned to wonder as we looked down at the jagged rocks descending into the frothy, deep-blue sea. We were speechless. We just marveled at what God had created. Such power. Such majesty. How powerful and majestic must the God who created it be! God’s creation bears witness about Him.

Likewise, our consciences testify to the justice and righteousness of God. There’s an overarching moral law that comes from above, and human beings, created in the image of God, intuitively know it. We all have a standard of behavior by which we believe we should live. Even post-moderns, who think of truth as relative, believe certain acts are wrong, at least if perpetrated against them. This is because there really is a standard by which we should live, and that standard comes from God and testifies to Him.

Both creation and conscience testify to the existence of God. However, we cannot know God personally through these aspects of general revelation. Our natural knowledge of God has been obscured by sin. We sons and daughters of Adam and Eve cannot truly know God unless He reveals Himself in a more specific way.

That specific way is Jesus, who is the image and radiance of God. God reveals Himself to us today in the Scriptures, through every word breathed out by Him. We can sit at the feet of Jesus every day as we open our Bibles and read. Don’t you want to know the God who created all things?

The Good Portion : Scripture

As women in the modern world we often juggle the responsibilities of work and school and home. Sometimes life is overwhelming and sometimes it is just mundane. But the God who sent His Son into the world to rescue sinners gives meaning to both the overwhelming and the mundane. He created us to enjoy knowing Him. In knowing God through the Scriptures we find meaning and joy!
