El Roi: The God who sees

Gen 16:13 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-are-the-God-Who-sees, for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?”

This name of God occurs only once in the Bible. Sarah’s Egyptian slave, Hagar encountered God in the desert and addressed Him as El Roi- the God who sees me.

Ishmael was Abraham and Sarah’s idea. They used a maid, Hagar, as was the common practice of the day, to bring forth an heir. But God was very clear that His plans were connected only to Isaac, Sarah’s son.

Hagar made the mistake of despising her mistress, Sarah and suffered the consequences. Yet, when Hagar fled into the desert, the all-seeing God noticed her distress and came to her to comfort and guide her life. How He cares for the lowly! How He looks after the abandoned!

El Roi is all-seeing. Pregnant, despised, poor and confused, yet Hagar discovered that she wasn’t alone. God knew her past, He pinpointed her exact location in the present and saw with perfect clarity what the future held for her. El Roi had plans for her. Hagar and her son would live and not die.

Matt 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.

El Roi watches over sparrows! How much more will He watch over you! He sees everything, knows everything and still loves you.

♥ Response: Lord, You are the God who sees me. You see my heart, read my thoughts, hear my words before they are even on my tongue. Open my eyes like Hagar, to see the One who sees me. In Jesus’ name.

Let’s pray:

Allow God to show you where you are hurting in your life. Then ask Him to heal your wounds.

Take time to bring any offence in your heart before God. Hear what He has to say for each situation and each person that offended you.

Choose to forgive each person and pray a blessing over them.
