Daily Double: Markin MarkExemplo
Jesus Frees Us from Our Old Life
By Sarah P
Jesus has continued moving around and doing what God has asked of Him - to share the Good News and bring people from the dark to the light. There are many circumstances where there has been some pushback from a certain crowd, the Pharisees.
Among the different things, Jesus has called another disciple, Levi, to come and follow Him. He dined with Levi and some of his companions in similar professions and Pharisees asked the disciples why he would do such a thing, while Jesus replied with one hefty mic-drop moment in Mark 2:17.
Jesus continues to invite his disciples and other followers to see a different way of thinking, putting aside the ‘has-been’ and welcoming in the ‘new’.
Drawing from the perspective of the Gospel of Mark, where we have the spotlight on Jesus’ seemingly everyday tasks and events, we can see that it was not easy to just do things that He planned to do. At every turn, there was a setback, a differing opinion based on laws older than Jesus, and most of that culture was ingrained into every individual.
I don’t know about you, but that happens in my own life and sometimes I get defeated. Culture is one of the hardest things to break free from when Jesus is calling me to be different.
But Jesus didn’t come to earth to instill what we’ve always thought or to just give us a pat on the back saying “Nice! Whatever direction you’re going in is great!”
He wants to transform our thinking as we embrace his teachings that will bring us into the light and out of darkness.
How will you take Jesus' teachings and break free from the 'has-been' to embrace the 'new'?
