MAKER OF THE HEAVENS 

6 He always had the nature of God, but he did not think that by force he should try to remain equal with God. 7 Instead of this, of his own free will he gave up all he had, and took the nature of a servant. He became like a human being and appeared in human likeness. 8 He was humble and walked the path of obedience all the way to death—his death on the cross. 9 For this reason God raised him to the highest place above and gave him the name that is greater than any other name. 10 And so, in honor of the name of Jesus all beings in heaven, on earth, and in the world below will fall on their knees, 11 and all will openly proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Have you ever received an unexpected gift from someone? A gift that was just right at just the right time? Maybe, it was something as simple as coffee and conversation at a time when you needed it most. Perhaps, it was something bigger like a financial gift that helped you make it through the month.

I’m sure, just like me, you have been on the giving and receiving end of many gifts just like this. The interesting thing about these beautiful moments is even though the giver may expect nothing in return because their generosity was sheerly out of their love for you, we know that we must somehow show our gratitude.

When I think of this song, I think of the most generous gift that Jesus could have ever given —His life. He gave so much so freely and it was for no other reason than his love for us, a love so deep that we may never understand.

I know that I will never be able to repay Him for what He has given me. The greatest amounts of money could never pay for what He has done. But what I have, I will give to Him. I can give Him my sacrifice through my resources to be a contribution to what He is doing in the world. We can commit our lives to Him by being resourceful stewards over the talents, gifts, dreams and passions He has given us. We can give Him our service to others by investing and building up those around us. We can give him our commitment to investing in and building relationships with those around us, using our influence with wisdom. Like the song so beautifully resembles in the chorus, as a result of what He has done, we can give Him something in return.

ACTION

Spend time in prayer and ask Jesus how you can show Him your gratitude. Ask Him how you can be an even better steward over the life He has given you. Ask him to show you the areas where He is pushing you to grow.

PRAYER

Jesus, thank you for giving me the greatest gift I could have ever received. I know I will never be able to repay you for what you’ve done on the cross but I want to live a life that honors you and honors your sacrifice. I don't want to be stagnant. I want to be moving in sync with you. Speak to me about what areas I need to grow in and show me the spaces in my life where you’re calling me to give even more.
