Devotions From John's Gospel

DAY 6 OF 17

Jesus tells His disciples (and us) just what was required of them (us). Jesus wants us to be selfless and generous in using our lives for others. His new commandment is just an extension of his earlier exhortation (13:14) of mutual feet washing. Which of these promotes the other: does loving promote serving or does serving generate love? On both occasions Jesus presents Himself as a model and standard: “as I have loved you,”(13:34) and “as I have done to you” (13:15). This has an impact not just on the beneficiaries of the act of love but has a far-reaching effect on all men to know that we belong to Jesus.

Dear sister, brother! Are there occasions you can name “This is how Jesus loved me”?

Do you think loving the other as Jesus loved you is easy?

Can you think of a person you may not be able to love?

What can you do to express “love” to that person during this season?

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, who taught me to love, I realize I have not been worthy of your love; yet you loved me. Give me the humility and patience to love the unlovable.

Jesus might say…..

My child, I have always loved you as my own child! I never thought of you as being unworthy of my love. That is the secret. Consider every unlovable person as God’s child and remember I love him/her. It is easy to join me in loving. Let us just do it!
