Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture MemorizationSample

The True Ruler
Pray…
Lord, remind me of the gifts you’ve already given me: grace, relationship, forgiveness, purpose, family, belonging, and peace. Help me to live truly as a citizen of heaven. I want my focus to be on you and your will for my life. Give me the strength to live faithfully and give me mercy when I fall short. In Jesus name, amen.
Read…
Only let us live up to what we have already attained. Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Philippians 3:16-21 NIV
Consider…
The moment we put our faith in Jesus, we are welcomed into God’s Kingdom as citizens of heaven. We are invited into a brand new way of life. A way of life defined by the example of Jesus and not the temptations of this world. Jesus wants us to be freed from those sinful desires so we can experience the fullness of life He offers.
In what ways are you still letting “your stomach” (your desires) rule you? Where does Jesus want to set you free? Are you willing to let Him?
If you are, pray and ask for Him to reveal those areas to you, and ask Him to make you more like Him.
Practice…
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.1 Peter 2:9-10 NIV
Take a few minutes to write this passage down word for word again. After you do, take a picture of what you wrote or type the verse out and send it to someone you know. Don’t make it weird. Just let them know you’re working on memorizing this passage of Scripture and that the next time they see you they should ask you to try and recite it.
This could also be a fun way to invite them to do the rest of this Plan with you!
Listen…
Set a timer for five minutes.
Find a quiet place and get alone with God. Maybe it’s outside, in your bedroom, or in your car. Just be still and listen to what God may be saying to you.
Ask Him to speak.
When you get distracted from your listening, come back to Jesus by meditating on your memory verse. Ask the Holy Spirit to change you to look more like Jesus today.

About this Plan

In part 4 of Becoming Like Jesus, we are going to explore what it looks like and why it matters to internalize truth. We are going to let God’s Word do what it’s meant to: transform us from the inside out. And there’s no better place to start than with the core who we are, letting His truth shape our identity.
