7 Biblical Principles on ParentingSample
Children Need Parents
Parents are essential to the health and future potential of a child. You’re not just keeping them alive; you are a primary indicator of their success. If you look at the quality of the life the parent or adult creates in a home, that is generally setting the tone for the future of that child except for those few who break the mold.
Be suspicious of anyone teaching that less parent involvement is better for kids. It’s an attack on families that comes around from time to time to harm the next generation. Rather, the Bible calls us to an intentional and active role in our kids’ lives. I remember being younger and hearing parents saying “I don’t want to influence my child, but just let them make their own decision.” This was said mainly about religion but is now used for all areas of life and even a child's gender. The truth, however, is that while you may get cultural applause for this form of distant parenting, it’s not healthy for your child’s formation, and it’s not Biblical.
God designed the family with a father and mother and then placed children in their care. If God felt children were better left alone to figure out life on their own, he would have given that command. Instead through the Bible, God gives strict penalties to parents who neglect to care for and discipline their children.
I see you Dad and Mom!
Great parenting can often just begin by being present—showing up to the moment—being present in their development, victories, and struggles, and not always to rescue them or remove them, but to walk with them and teach them through the seasons of life.
One of the simple and instinctive ways you can see the value of a parent is when you’re at an event that your child is a part of, for example, a play or sports. When they come on the scene, they are always scanning the audience until they lock eyes with their parent. A huge smile comes to their face, and then they can do their thing. It’s your presence that makes a massive difference in their mental, emotional, and physical state.
Show up and be present with your kids!
