DAY 4 OF 10

Day 4: Check Your Roots:
Welcome back to day 4! Today, we’re discussing why our roots must be nourished in order to blossom into something beautiful for God.

In the Scriptures, roots are often used metaphorically to illustrate important spiritual concepts. The book of Jeremiah describes the blessed person as being “like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream” (Jeremiah 17:8, NIV). This imagery emphasizes the importance of seeking a connection with God, the ultimate source of life and nourishment. Just as the roots of a tree draw from the soil to receive water and nutrients, mankind is invited to tap into the wellspring of God’s love, wisdom, and grace. Your life will be the result of what or who you are connected to.

God has a lot to say about how deep roots (in the right soil) are the source of all growth—both in the natural and the spiritual.

First, our roots are the wellspring of Christ-like love. In his letter to the Ephesians, the apostle Paul encourages believers to be rooted and grounded in love (Ephesians 3:17), highlighting the significance of establishing a firm foundation in the love of Christ.

The roots of a tree also serve as an anchor, providing stability and support. Similarly, mankind finds stability and security when rooted in God’s truth. In the book of Colossians, Paul urges believers to be “rooted and built up in him [Christ] and established in the faith” (Colossians 2:7, NKJV). By grounding ourselves in the teachings of Christ and His Word, we develop a solid foundation that enables us to withstand the storms of life and remain steadfast in our spiritual journey.

Finally, the image of roots conveys the idea of interconnectedness. In the same way that trees share resources through their root systems, humanity is called to live in unity and community. Just as the roots of trees intertwine and support one another, so too are we called to support, encourage, and uplift one another in our spiritual walk. It is difficult to fulfill this responsibility to one another if we have bad roots in us.

You have to take care of your roots, water them, and keep them hydrated. It’s the water of God that hydrates our souls, not man’s generic substitutes. We are enticed out of the will of God when God does not satisfy us. The reason we chase worldly things is because we are thirsty. Jesus told the woman at the well that she was thirsty. You’ve been drinking but are not satisfied because you haven’t drunk the right water yet. We may attempt to plant our lives next to a stream of self-sufficiency, only to find ourselves thirsting. It is the water of God’s Word that we are to drink day and night because it creates abundant life.

You cannot rely on your environment, nor can you rely solely on your church, to guarantee your victory. You must actively seek another level of knowledge that will reinforce the bedrock of your existence, allowing you to withstand even greater pressures that lie in wait.

Just as the roots of a tree extend unseen beneath the surface, so too does our spiritual journey often take place in the hidden places of our hearts.
