Sustenance (S3-E8)Sample

Who are you echoing?
Have you ever heard the saying, “Be a voice, not an echo.” The idea sounds appealing. Have your own voice. Do not simply repeat what others say. In a world full of opinions, headlines, and noise, originality feels important.
But there is another way to look at it.
Having your “own voice” can also feel like pressure. As if you are expected to always know what to say, always be insightful, always be original. That can become heavy quickly.
A better question may be this: who are you echoing?
In this episode, Jesus teaches a crowd of thousands in an open field. There are no microphones, no speakers, no technology to amplify His voice. Instead, the disciples listen closely and then repeat His words to the people around them. The message moves through the crowd like an echo. The source is Jesus, but the words travel through His followers.
It is a beautiful picture.
In many ways, this is still how it works today. You hear Jesus’ words, and you pass them on. The power is not in your originality. The power is in the source. The words remain His, but you get to participate in sharing them.
That invitation comes with responsibility. You cannot echo what you have not heard. To pass on Jesus’ words, you must first listen. You listen through prayer. Through Scripture. Through time spent paying attention to what He says and how He speaks.
The goal is not for people to be impressed by you. The goal is for them to encounter Jesus.
There is one more detail worth noticing. Each disciple echoes Jesus’ words in a slightly different way. Some speak loudly. Others speak quietly. Some use gestures. Others speak simply and directly. The words are the same, but the delivery reflects who they are.
That is where your voice matters.
Jesus’ words carry Spirit and life. When you echo them faithfully, they pass through your personality, your story, and your relationships. The result is not uniformity, but a living message shared in many ways.
So consider this: whose words are shaping what you say? And how might Jesus want to speak through you today?
Reflection Questions
- Do you tend to focus more on having your own voice or on who you are echoing?
- How do you listen for the words of Jesus in your daily life?
- In what ways could you pass on His words of life to others?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, Your words are full of Spirit and life. Teach me to listen closely to You and to echo Your words faithfully. Let what I say reflect Your truth, Your grace, and Your love. Use my voice so that others may hear You through me. Amen.
