Reading With the People of God #15 PurposeSample

Purpose Rooted in the Unity and Diversity of God
Ecclesiastes 4:13-16 reflects on leadership, legacy, and the fragile nature of human influence. The "Preacher" reminds us that wise leadership is rare and fleeting, yet every generation holds the responsibility to rise and contribute meaningfully. This challenges us to consider how our purpose connects not only to our individual lives but also to the legacy we leave within the community.
In Ephesians 4, Paul emphasizes the call to unity and maturity within the body of Christ. He invites us to live as one, reflecting the fullness of Christ by embracing our diverse gifts and roles. Verse 30 speaks to the importance of honoring God’s presence among us as we live out this calling.
As you meditate on today’s readings, consider how your purpose is shaped by participating in this divine community, called to unity, yet uniquely gifted to contribute to the whole.
Reflection Question:
In what ways is your sense of purpose shaped by your connection to others in the body of Christ?
Prayer of Illumination:
God of unity and diversity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—
as we open your Word, open our hearts. Help us to see beyond ourselves,
to understand our place in the larger story You are writing.
Teach us to walk with humility, to lead with wisdom,
and to live in ways that honor Your presence among us.
Shape us through Your Spirit to become a people who reflect
the fullness of Christ in both our uniqueness and our unity.
Amen.
About this Plan

This is the fifteenth installment of our Bible reading plan, following a lectionary-style pattern with daily readings from the Psalms, Old Testament, and New Testament. Each day includes a devotional primer to guide your time in God’s Word. This month’s theme is purpose. In Ecclesiastes, we question what truly matters. Song of Songs reveals the purpose of love and relationships. Paul’s letters call us to live with clarity, identity, and mission in Christ. Together, these books invite us to discover God’s purpose—and how it shapes every part of our lives.
