Over the Hill & Picking Up Speed

DAY 3 OF 9

Caleb – A Warrior Who Conquered Hebron

Scripture

“Now, as you can see, the Lord has kept me alive and well as he promised for all these forty-five years since Moses made this promise - even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty-five years old. I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then. So, give me the hill country that the Lord promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the Lord is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the Lord said.” (Joshua 14:10-12 NLT)

Reflection

Caleb stands as a powerful example of unwavering faith in God. Chosen by Moses as one of the twelve spies sent to explore Canaan, only he and Joshua returned with a hopeful report. While the others focused on the visible challenges, Caleb trusted in God's promise that Israel would inherit the land. Even at 85, Caleb didn’t choose comfort or retirement - he boldly requested the task of conquering Hebron, demonstrating his enduring strength and courage.

His story challenges us: how often do we view our own situations only through the lens of difficulty, rather than with faith in a God who makes the impossible possible?

Application

Take a moment to reflect on a past or present situation and try to view it with a positive, optimistic perspective rather than a negative one.

Prayer

Father, help me see the possibilities in every situation, no matter how overwhelming. When I feel limited by age or energy, remind me to draw strength from You and be inspired by examples like Caleb.

About this Plan

Over the Hill & Picking Up Speed

Aging is often seen as slowing down - but what if it's just the beginning of your most purposeful season? This 9-day devotional challenges cultural views on aging and highlights how God continues to call, empower, and use people in their later years. Through the lives of biblical figures like Moses, Caleb, and Anna, you’ll see that purpose doesn’t fade with age. In God’s Kingdom, every season matters—and maturity can bring momentum.
