Elizabeth & Zechariah – Parents of John the Baptist
Scripture
“Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God’s eyes, careful to obey all of the Lord’s commandments and regulations. They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to conceive, and they were both very old.” (Luke 1:6-7 NLT)
“But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a son, and you are to name him John.” Luke (1:13 NLT)
Reflection
The Bible tells us that Elizabeth and Zechariah were elderly and beyond the natural age for having children. In their culture, childbearing was seen as a woman's highest calling, and being childless brought deep shame and social stigma. Yet, their natural limitations gave way to God’s supernatural power. After much prayer, God responded and announced the birth of their son, John, who would prepare the way for the coming Messiah and turn many hearts back to God.
In response, Elizabeth rejoiced, saying, “How kind the Lord is… for He has taken away my disgrace of having no children.”
But God!
Just as He did for Elizabeth, God meets us in our own barren places - those places where there seems to be no solution, where hope fades with time. It is often in these moments that God acts beyond the natural to bring about His divine purpose.
Application
When considering the story of Elizabeth and Zechariah, it's natural to focus on the limitations of age and circumstance. It prompts us to ask, what seemingly impossible situations in your own life test your faith in God’s ability to overcome the facts?
Prayer
Father, you are a God who knows no limits. With you, the word impossible is translated into I’m possible. You make ways where there are no ways. What you will do for one, you will do for another, as you are no respecter of persons. Help me to dwell on your goodness and not the number associated with my years on Earth. There is nothing impossible with you.
