Over the Hill & Picking Up Speed

DAY 7 OF 9

Simeon – A Prophet Who Recognized the Messiah

Scripture

“At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So, when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all.” (Luke 2:25-31 NLT)

Reflection

Simeon is believed to have been an elderly man, though Scripture does not specify his age. He held firmly to a divine promise that he would see God’s salvation in the form of the baby Jesus. Once this promise was fulfilled, Simeon was at peace and ready to depart this life. He also spoke prophetically to Mary about Jesus’ future.

Have you received promises from God? If so, are you holding onto them and treasuring them in your heart as you wait for their fulfillment? In today’s fast-paced world, we often expect immediate results, but some promises require time and patience. Like Simeon, are you willing to wait—trusting God's timing even when it's not your own?

Application

Pause in silence before God and ask Him to remind you of a promise He has made to you. Write it down, and surrender the timing of its fulfillment to Him, trusting that He will bring it to pass.

Prayer

Father, I surrender to Your perfect timing for the fulfillment of Your promises. Thank You for the closeness we share - that You are a living, approachable God. My confidence rests in You to bring Your word to pass at the right time.

About this Plan

Over the Hill & Picking Up Speed

Aging is often seen as slowing down - but what if it's just the beginning of your most purposeful season? This 9-day devotional challenges cultural views on aging and highlights how God continues to call, empower, and use people in their later years. Through the lives of biblical figures like Moses, Caleb, and Anna, you’ll see that purpose doesn’t fade with age. In God’s Kingdom, every season matters—and maturity can bring momentum.
