Prerequisites to PurposeSample

Image Before Assignment
Devotional
Before God gives any assignment, He establishes identity. The Genesis narrative shows a divine pattern: God first forms, then He assigns. He creates man in His image and likeness—reflecting His character, nature, and essence—before He gives the mandate to rule, subdue, and be fruitful. This order is not accidental; it is spiritual law. When identity is not rooted in God, purpose becomes distorted.
Many people begin the purpose journey by asking, “What am I called to do?” when Scripture teaches us to begin by asking, “Who am I in God?” Romans 8 reveals that God’s first intention for every believer is Christlikeness. Purpose is not primarily a career path or a passion—it is conformity to the image of Jesus. When we bypass this step, we create a version of purpose that is built on ambition, culture, personality, or giftedness, not God.
This is why so many so-called “purpose journeys” feel empty: they are built on performance, not identity. But God designed purpose to flow from intimacy. Before God ever tells you what to do, He shapes who you become. Your assignment must rise from identity, because identity sustains assignment. If you don’t know who you are, you will use purpose to validate yourself. You will act to feel significant instead of acting out of significance.
God calls us back to the foundational truth: purpose begins with image. We were created to reflect God before we were empowered to represent God.
Prayer
Father, anchor my purpose in my identity in You. Shape me into the image of Christ and build my assignment upon who You have made me to be. May everything I do flow from who I am in You.

About this Plan

Purpose does not begin with talent, ambition, or desire—it begins with God. Before the question of purpose can be answered, Scripture shows a clear prerequisite: encountering God, knowing Him, surrendering to Him, and being transformed into His image. These foundational experiences shape how we understand purpose and protect us from a self-centered interpretation. This 5-day devotional explores the divine pattern that precedes purpose discovery: identity, encounter, brokenness, surrender, and the knowledge of God.
