Prerequisites to Purpose

DAY 2 OF 5

Encounter Before Instruction

Devotional

Moses’ encounter at the burning bush reveals one of the most important truths about purpose: God reveals Himself before He reveals your assignment. Moses spent 40 years tending sheep in Midian, unaware that heaven had a greater script for his life. But his purpose did not begin when he became passionate, prepared, or ready—it began when God manifested Himself.

Notice the divine sequence:

  1. God captures Moses’ attention with the burning bush.
  2. God introduces Himself.
  3. Moses becomes deeply aware of his inadequacy.
  4. God then reveals the assignment.

This is the pattern: God → Me → Assignment.
But many of us reverse it: Assignment → Me → God.

Moses’ first reaction after seeing God was not excitement but fear, reverence, and humility. He realized the magnitude of the One who was calling him. God’s revelation shattered Moses’ self-confidence and replaced it with God-confidence. Before God explains purpose, He adjusts posture.

Without an encounter, purpose can become self-appointed or self-defined. But when you truly meet God:

  • Your ambitions are rearranged.
  • Your priorities are reordered.
  • Your desires are purified.
  • Your confidence is redirected.

Moses learned that purpose is not something you choose—it is something you respond to when God reveals Himself. The presence of God is the womb where purpose is conceived. If you have not encountered the God of purpose, you cannot carry the purpose of God.

Prayer

Lord, before You show me my assignment, reveal Yourself to me. Let my purpose arise from revelation, not ambition. Help me encounter You in a life-changing way that shapes my calling and empowers my obedience.

About this Plan

Prerequisites to Purpose

Purpose does not begin with talent, ambition, or desire—it begins with God. Before the question of purpose can be answered, Scripture shows a clear prerequisite: encountering God, knowing Him, surrendering to Him, and being transformed into His image. These foundational experiences shape how we understand purpose and protect us from a self-centered interpretation. This 5-day devotional explores the divine pattern that precedes purpose discovery: identity, encounter, brokenness, surrender, and the knowledge of God.
