Prerequisites to Purpose

DAY 3 OF 5

Brokenness Before Commission

Devotional

Isaiah’s calling is one of the clearest examples of the prerequisite of brokenness. Isaiah did not hear the voice of divine assignment until he first saw the holiness of God. The moment he beheld the majesty of the Lord, he was undone. His confidence melted. His righteousness seemed like dust. His lips, once used to prophesy, now felt unclean.

This is a common thread through Scripture: every man who truly meets God becomes painfully aware of his insufficiency. True encounters dismantle pride. They expose the man-made ambitions we try to baptize as “purpose.” They reveal how small we are and how great God is.

Brokenness is not self-hate—it is divine alignment. It is the moment when your agenda dies and God’s agenda begins. Isaiah was not useful until he was undone. He could not represent God until he was transformed by God. The burning coal on his lips was not punishment—it was preparation. Heaven cleansed what heaven intended to use.

After the cleansing came the calling. Not before. Only after Isaiah had been purged, stripped of pride, and reoriented in God’s presence did he hear the heavenly question: “Whom shall I send?” Only then could he respond, “Here am I. Send me.”

The principle remains:

  • God commissions those He has cleansed.
  • Purpose without brokenness produces pride.
  • Purpose after brokenness produces obedience.

If your purpose does not humble you, it did not come from God.

Prayer

Lord, break everything in me that competes with Your will. Purify my heart, cleanse my motives, and make me a vessel You can send. Strip me of pride and fill me with humility and obedience.

About this Plan

Prerequisites to Purpose

Purpose does not begin with talent, ambition, or desire—it begins with God. Before the question of purpose can be answered, Scripture shows a clear prerequisite: encountering God, knowing Him, surrendering to Him, and being transformed into His image. These foundational experiences shape how we understand purpose and protect us from a self-centered interpretation. This 5-day devotional explores the divine pattern that precedes purpose discovery: identity, encounter, brokenness, surrender, and the knowledge of God.
