Blessed to Be a Blessing

DAY 1 OF 7

Day 1 — The First Blessing

When the Bible opens, the very first thing God does toward humanity is stunning in its simplicity: He blesses them. Before Adam and Eve accomplish anything, before they work, serve, or obey, God’s posture toward them is generosity.

But notice this. God’s blessing immediately carries purpose. He says, “Be fruitful… multiply… fill the earth… rule…” (NIV, Genesis 1:28). Blessing was never meant to be something we hold. It was meant to be something we carry. God blesses His people so His goodness can move through them into the world.

Over time, we have drifted from this truth. Today, blessing often gets measured by comfort, finances, opportunities, safety, and success. But Scripture paints a different picture. The Hebrew word for bless, barak, means “to empower” or “to endow.” When God blesses, He imparts His strength so we can fulfill His purpose.

I once had all the outward symbols of blessing: a nice car, financial comfort, and plenty of opportunities. Yet inside, I felt empty and directionless. Later, when my surroundings were simpler and my resources fewer, I discovered a deeper blessing — purpose, peace, and the presence of God. I began to learn what Paul meant when he said he could be content “in plenty or in want” through Christ (NIV, Philippians 4:12–13).

Biblical blessing is not about accumulation. It is about alignment. It is not about what fills your hands, but what fills your heart. And through Christ, we now stand in the same calling given to Abraham, to be blessed so that others may be blessed (Galatians 3:29).

Blessing is God’s invitation to participate in His mission, right where you are, with what He has already placed in your life.

For Reflection

Where might God be inviting you to see blessing not as something you hold, but as something He wants to flow through your life to others?

About this Plan

Blessed to Be a Blessing

This 7-day devotional invites you into the biblical vision of blessing — not as something you hold on to, but as something God longs to move through your life. From creation’s first blessing in Genesis to Abraham’s pilgrim faith, from the character Jesus forms in us to the calling to bless the nations, each day traces how God turns ordinary people into conduits of His goodness. Through Scripture, reflection, and simple practices, you’ll learn to live not as a reservoir but as a river, receiving from God and releasing His blessing into the world.
