Blessed to Be a BlessingSample

Day 5 — Seeking the City: Living for What Lasts
Abraham lived his entire life in tents. No palace. No hometown. No structures bearing his name. And this wasn’t because he lacked resources. Scripture says he was very wealthy. Abraham lived lightly on earth because he was anchored somewhere else. He was looking forward to the city God Himself was building.
This is the secret of a blessed life: learning to see earthly blessings as shadows of eternal fullness. Abraham understood this. He held every gift loosely because he knew the real treasure was ahead.
Hebrews says he and the other fathers of faith “welcomed the promises from a distance… longing for a better country, a heavenly one” (NIV, Hebrews 11:13–16). They lived with a kind of holy homesickness. They understood they were strangers here, investing in the world to come.
God has placed that same longing inside us. Ecclesiastes says He has “set eternity in the human heart” (NIV, Ecclesiastes 3:11). The ache we feel, the sense that this world can’t fully satisfy, is not a flaw. It is a compass. It points us toward the city whose foundations are unshakable.
And here is the beautiful truth: every time you bless someone, serve someone, give generously, or invest in another person’s faith, you are building treasure in that eternal city. Jesus said heaven will repay what earth cannot (Luke 14:13–14). Nothing done in His name is wasted.
When we bless others here, the fullness of blessing waits there. Abraham knew it. The early church lived it. Now it is our turn.
Lift your eyes. Loosen your grip. Live for the city that lasts forever.
For Reflection:
What earthly “tent” have you been treating like a permanent home, and how is God inviting you to shift your focus toward the city He is building?
Gather Around the Table:
Share one way you want to invest in eternity this week.

About this Plan

This 7-day devotional invites you into the biblical vision of blessing — not as something you hold on to, but as something God longs to move through your life. From creation’s first blessing in Genesis to Abraham’s pilgrim faith, from the character Jesus forms in us to the calling to bless the nations, each day traces how God turns ordinary people into conduits of His goodness. Through Scripture, reflection, and simple practices, you’ll learn to live not as a reservoir but as a river, receiving from God and releasing His blessing into the world.
