Reflecting Jesus

In these verses, Jesus tells His followers that holding to His teachings will make them His disciples, which will lead to knowing the truth and being set free. What does this mean for us? And free from what?

There’s more to a life with Jesus than just accepting Him as Lord and Saviour. To live a life surrendered to Jesus is to live according to His ways, which God so kindly outlines for us in His Holy Word. A life surrendered to Jesus is a life that’s open to abiding in Jesus, knowing His heart and character, and becoming more like Him.

None of us are perfect or holy, yet God in His graciousness corrects and refines us to be more like Jesus. His correction and refinement make it possible for us to live like Him and to love others in the same way He did. And when we allow ourselves to sit in the presence of God and to follow the prompts of the Holy Spirit, we will know the truth; that through the sacrifice of Jesus, we can live a life free from sin and shame. We can stop striving and live in His unconditional love. And we can know that we are fully seen, loved and adored by a heavenly Father who sent His Son for us.

Whilst it won’t always be pleasant, because correction and refinement rarely are, it will be worth it. May we all willingly seek His discipleship, correction and love today. Not just for our own sakes, but for those around us, that they may encounter Jesus and find salvation and freedom too.
