Day 2: When Arrows Don't Land
I once met a close friend who had renounced his faith; I came with five carefully chosen points—golden, I thought—and saw each one form a shining arrow from my mouth. His personal angel caught them mid-flight and finally absorbed three in its chest, then later set all five arrows in my cupholder and said, “I’m sorry, but your arrows are too dirty.” That sentence unraveled me, because it put the question back on my heart: not “Why won’t they hear?” but “What’s mixed in me?”
The Lord began to show me “spiritual structures”—human-built empires of value and certainty that look tidy but misalign the heart. A neighbor’s neat walls weren’t demonic, just isolation turned into architecture; a couple’s phalanx of criticism protected but also pierced; a cozy “rest” space in a family was coated with sludge because leisure had replaced presence. Not every resistance is rebellion; often it’s architecture—internal empires laid brick by brick from our own knowledge of good and evil. And clean arrows don’t pass through the empire the way pride assumes; love does.
So I learned to test words for mixture: grievance, self-justification, cultural idols—anything that drags the message off Jesus’ shoulders onto mine. God’s remedy isn’t cynicism; it’s consecration—repenting of the small kingdoms I’ve built and returning to first love, so the message carries the honor guard of His presence again.
If a true word keeps failing, I ask, "What structure is it striking?" What fruit does my approach produce over time? Am I preaching certainty or practicing love? Golden arrows become clean when motives are washed and delivery is yoked to Jesus’ compassion.
Reflection Questions:
- Which admirable value has hardened into an idol?
- What fruit has a cherished “structure” produced in relationships?
- Where have method and tone dirtied an otherwise true arrow?
Prayer:
Holy God, dismantle my empires and cleanse my motives. Wash my words so they carry compassion and power, not pressure and pride. Make my life a proclamation: “Your power goes with this one.” Let love make the way.
About this Plan

In this four-day devotional plan, Blake Healy invites readers to see what he sees: glimpses of angels, spiritual structures, and the Father’s heart shaping every moment. As you read, you’ll learn a simple rhythm—to look for God’s nature first, dismantle inner empires, practice humble interpretation, and release love that actually transforms. Each devotional blends story, Scripture, and practice so spiritual sight becomes everyday discipleship, tuning hearts to Jesus and sending clean, compassionate arrows that land in love.
