Genesis: Chapter by ChapterSample

In school, one of the fastest ways to start a conflict was calling someone a name, especially one that didn’t fit. It didn’t matter if it was the playground or the cafeteria; those words carried weight. And let’s be honest, that doesn’t magically stop when we become adults. The setting changes, but the sting is the same. Someone labels you incorrectly, and suddenly your whole posture changes. Identity has a way of pulling a reaction out of us.
That’s why Jacob’s encounter with God is so powerful. Jacob wrestles with God, and in that struggle, everything changes. God gives him a new name; Israel, marking a turning point in both his identity and his future. The blessing didn’t come from striving harder, but from surrendering fully. Though challenges and failures don’t disappear overnight, Jacob begins to walk with greater humility and dependence on God.
This moment reminds us that encountering God reshapes how we see ourselves, and how we face people and problems. When God defines us, we no longer have to defend ourselves.
