When I was a kid playing video games, there were certain moments when things started going badly right from the beginning. If my character fell into a pit, lost all their lives, or made one wrong move too many, I’d just hit the reset button and start over. Clean slate. No consequences. Honestly, I’m really glad God isn’t like that.
God doesn’t discard us when we mess up. He doesn’t reset the game and move on to someone else. Instead, He stays with us, molding us, maturing us, and growing us, often through the very difficulties our choices create.
We see this in Jacob’s early life. Deception and manipulation shape his story, leading to broken relationships and painful consequences. Yet even in Jacob’s dishonesty, God continues working out His purposes. In Jacob’s uncertainty and fear, God meets him with grace, reminding us that He is at work even while we are still being shaped.
These chapters show us that God’s plan is not dependent on human perfection. His grace often meets us in the middle of the process, not at the finish line.
