The Four Loves

DAY 8 OF 21

Philia: Are You a Friend of God?

Imagine you walk into a social gathering with a close friend, someone who doesn’t know everyone in your circle. As you move through the room, greeting familiar faces, you introduce your friend along the way. Then someone approaches, points to the person beside you, and asks, “So…who’s your friend?”

Hold on to that question. We’ll come back to it.

In week two of our devotional, we will shift our focus to the next two expressions of love found in Scripture. The first is philia, a love built on friendship. It describes a deep bond between people who may not share blood, yet share life in deep and meaningful ways. Sometimes these friendships become even closer than family. Philia is love by choice. It is not a feeling or biology, but a chosen loyalty that grows through shared joys, mutual trust, and standing together through seasons of hardship. This kind of love reflects God’s heart for community, bearing each other’s burdens not because we must, but because we willingly choose to walk side by side as true friends.

The measure of true friendship isn’t simply company or proximity; it is a very real strength through the ups and downs of life. When life becomes heavy, philia-love shows up. It listens. It prays. It sticks around. And when life is up, philia love is close by to smile, laugh, and enjoy it with you, without jealousy or envy. Through friendships like these, we begin to understand how God walks with us—faithful, steady, and close. God doesn’t just call us to know Him as Lord; He invites us to know Him as Friend.

In James 2, we read that Abraham was called God’s friend. Their relationship didn’t begin that way, but it grew into that over time. What an astonishing title, to be called a friend of God, and it's something every believer should aspire to. To be God’s friend is a high calling. It means being trustworthy, loyal, and devoted. It means choosing to listen, to obey, and to walk faithfully even when we don’t fully understand. God has never failed in His friendship toward us. And though we fail Him often, His goodness is displayed in the way He continually invites us back, restoring us, welcoming us, and renewing that friendship again and again.

Just two chapters later, James gives a warning: some people try to be friends of the world. But he makes it clear that you cannot be a friend of God and of the world at the same time. You cannot be deeply devoted and loyal to both God and the world. The moment of salvation is the moment you choose your allegiance. Yet many Christians attempt to maintain friendship with both, and it leads to spiritual drift, compromise, and lukewarm faith, which is no faith at all.

Let's return to the question in the room. Someone points at the person beside you and asks, “So, who’s your friend?” Think about that in your own life. In the quiet places of your heart, how would you answer? Is your loyalty with the world? Or is it with God, your Creator, your Savior, and the Friend who never leaves? What do your actions point to? How does the way you live out your daily life reflect who your friends are?

This week, take time to reflect and decide: who’s your friend?

About this Plan

The Four Loves

This 21-day devotional offers a Scripture-centered journey into the biblical meaning of love. Through daily Bible readings and short reflections, you’ll explore four key expressions of love—storge (affection), philia (friendship), eros (covenant passion), and agape (self-giving love)—and how God uses each to shape our lives. Beginning with the question “What is love?” and moving toward practical challenges like loving difficult people, this devotional is designed to transform your heart, strengthen your relationships, and deepen your understanding of God’s loving nature. It’s an invitation to experience God’s love more fully and reflect it faithfully to others.
