Wind & Fire - ReflectionsSample

Written by Javier De La Rosa - Discipleship Minister at City on a Hill Melbourne
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’" - Matthew 25:34-30 (ESV)
In this passage, Jesus pulls back the curtain and gives us a glimpse into the heart of God. What we see is both sobering and beautiful: God so closely identifies with the needy, the overlooked, and the vulnerable that how we treat them is counted as how we treat Him.
This is not because the poor and broken earn God’s attention, but because God’s heart has always moved toward those in need. In the gospel, we see this most clearly. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God looked upon the lowly, the sinful, and the helpless, people like you and me, and met our deepest need. He gave us what we could never secure for ourselves: perfect love from our Creator.
Having received that love, we are now invited to reflect it. The Holy Spirit equips the church with gifts of love (service, mercy, generosity, hospitality), not so we feel useful, but so others might experience something of God’s care. When we love the hungry, the lonely, the vulnerable, and the forgotten, we are not merely doing good deeds; we are responding to Christ Himself.
Love, in the kingdom of God, is rarely abstract. It takes shape in meals shared, time given, hands extended, and dignity restored. These acts may seem small, but Jesus tells us they matter deeply. In loving “the least of these,” we participate in the very love that first sought and saved us.
Reflect:
Based on today’s reading:
How is the Holy Spirit inviting me to respond today, for God’s glory and the good of others?
Pray:
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me when I was weak and in need. Open my eyes to see those around me whom You care deeply for. By Your Spirit, help me to love generously, serve humbly, and reflect Your compassion to the least of these. Amen

About this Plan

Wind & Fire is a devotional journey written by Javier de la Rosa to help you understand and pursue the spiritual gifts God gives his church. This series explores how the spiritual gifts are given for the mission of Jesus. You will study the gifts by looking at the church’s missional activities of love, presence, formation, freedom, witness and multiplication. Each devotion invites you to open the Scriptures, open your heart and ask the Holy Spirit for fresh power, fresh gifts and fresh wind and fire.
