“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” - Matthew 5:14 (ESV)

When Jesus calls His followers “the light of the world,” He is not offering encouragement so much as making a declaration. Because He is the true Light, those united to Him now reflect His light into the world. This is not something we achieve through effort or visibility, but something we receive as a result of belonging to Christ and living under His reign.

A city set on a hill is visible not because it tries to be seen, but because of where it is placed. In the same way, God places His church in the world to reflect Jesus, to display His character, His truth, and His grace. Through the Holy Spirit, God equips the church with spiritual gifts so that this light is not dim or distorted, but clear and compelling. As the church is built up in love, truth, service, and unity, the life of Christ becomes visible.

This is how God’s kingdom comes and His will is done. The Spirit forms the church to look like Jesus, and through that Spirit-empowered life together, God is glorified and the world is invited to see what life under His rule looks like. The church does not manufacture light; it bears witness to it.

When we use our gifts to serve one another, speak truth, show mercy, and love sacrificially, we participate in God’s mission to the ends of the earth. Our shared life becomes a signpost pointing beyond ourselves, to the King who reigns and the kingdom that cannot be hidden.

Pray:

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling us out of darkness and into Your light. By Your Spirit, shape Your church to reflect Your character and glory. Help me to use the gifts You have given so that Your kingdom may be seen and Your will done in and through us. Amen.
