Wind & Fire - ReflectionsSample

Written by Javier De La Rosa - Discipleship Minister at City on a Hill Melbourne
“Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, ‘Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ This is a desert place. And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go over and join this chariot.’ So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ And he said, ‘How can I, unless someone guides me?’ And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.” - Acts 8:26–31 (ESV)
The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch is a vivid picture of how God multiplies His work through ordinary obedience. Philip is not following a strategic plan or responding to a public invitation. He is simply listening. The Spirit prompts him to go, to approach, and to speak, and Philip responds with availability and trust.
What follows is striking. The Spirit has already been at work in the eunuch’s heart, stirring questions and longing through God’s Word. Philip’s role is not to manufacture interest, but to come alongside, open Scripture, and point clearly to Jesus. The result is faith, joy, and baptism, one life changed, and the gospel carried further than Philip could have imagined.
This account may feel distant from our everyday lives, but the same Spirit is at work today. God still prompts His people through conversations, questions, moments of curiosity, and quiet nudges, to share the life-giving news of Jesus. Multiplication happens when God’s people are available, attentive, and prepared to speak of Christ with clarity and grace.
The gifts of the Spirit are given for this very purpose. Wisdom, discernment, teaching, encouragement, and faith equip us to take the gospel beyond ourselves. We may not always see the full impact, but when we listen and obey, God delights to use our small steps to bring about eternal fruit.
Reflect:
Based on today’s reading:
How is the Holy Spirit inviting me to respond today, for God’s glory and the good of others?
Pray:
Holy Spirit, help me to be attentive to Your leading and willing to respond. Give me courage to speak of Jesus and wisdom to open Your Word with others. Use my obedience, however small, to carry the gospel further for Your glory. Amen.
