Wind & Fire - ReflectionsSample

Written by Javier De La Rosa - Discipleship Minister at City on a Hill Melbourne
“And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ And he said to them, ‘This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.’”- Mark 9:28-29 (ESV)
The disciples come to Jesus with a painful question: Why couldn’t we do it? They had seen power before. They had participated in ministry. Yet here they are, confronted with their limits and their weakness. Jesus’ response is gentle but searching, this kind comes only through prayer.
Jesus is not dismissing effort or skill; He is reorienting His disciples to dependence. The kingdom of God does not advance through human strength, confidence, or technique, but through faith expressed in prayer. Prayer is not a last resort when everything else fails; it is the posture of those who know where true power resides.
We are not oblivious about the world we live in. The effects of the fall are real: sickness, oppression, suffering, and deep hardship touch every life. Some situations seem immovable, beyond healing or change. Yet God, in His mercy, has given His people the gifts of faith and prayer, through which we appeal to the Creator of all things. What is impossible to us is not impossible for Him.
This does not mean every prayer will be answered in the way we expect. Even as our physical strength may fail, we are sustained by something far greater. Through Christ’s resurrection, we are eternally united to Him. Our hope is secure, our future guaranteed, and our lives held by a power stronger than death itself.
Freedom, then, is found not in control, but in trust. As we pray in faith, we place our weakness into the hands of a faithful God and we discover that His power is sufficient.
Reflect:
Based on today’s reading:
How is the Holy Spirit inviting me to respond today, for God’s glory and the good of others?
Pray:
Lord Jesus, remind me that true power comes from You alone. Teach me to depend on You through faith and prayer, especially when situations feel impossible. Strengthen my trust in You, and help me rest in the hope secured by Your resurrection. Amen
