Easter Reflections

DAY 13 OF 28

After supper, Jesus went to Mount Olives to pray. The task before him was daunting - bearing the punishment due to man's sin. He coveted the prayers of the disciples with him. Even with an angel strengthening him, the emotional toll was heavy enough for his sweat to come out like blood.

We can see his humanity when he asks that the cup be taken away. Even so, his submission to the Father is unquestioned, as he prays, "Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done."

What is the extent of your submission to God? Do you submit only when all is easy and rosy, or are you equally submissive through the rough and rugged life patches? Generally, as humans, we tend to prefer obeying God's commands when it does not cost us much. We even go into a time of praise when the 'cup' is taken away. We wish that the bitter cup would always be kept away from us.

God sent an angel to help Jesus during his earthly life's most difficult moment. Today, God has given us his Spirit to comfort us, even as we face the bitter cup he often allows us to drink. It could be a chronic illness, a lack, or even the death of a loved one. His faithfulness is seen in how he providentially works for our good through our many afflictions, not just in his shielding us from them. Jesus said, "Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done." May this be the posture of our hearts this Easter.

Prayer:

Father, many are the times when I am weak in faith. I will hardly submit joyfully to your good and perfect will. Please give me the rest I need to trust in you. In Jesus's name. Amen.
