Easter Reflections

DAY 12 OF 28

Judas, mastered by greed, accepted thirty pieces of silver to betray Jesus to the chief priests. It mattered little to Judas that his Master had entrusted him with so much. Not even all the beautiful promises he had shared with them about the kingdom of God did anything to disentangle Judas from his greedy heart. So when the time came, he willingly double-crossed his Master.

The betrayal marked the beginning of terrible pains and woes for the Son of God, even though we know that he voluntarily laid down his life for us (John 10:18).

We all know how meaningful friendships are to us as human beings. We trust our friends with our thoughts and even vulnerabilities. They sometimes know us better than our families do. Good friends will be with us through the highs and lows of life. They are never supposed to harm and work for our downfall.

But many do fail us, and like Judas, we also have sometimes proven unreliable and easily given to selfishness, harming our friends. We would do well to assess whether we are sincere friends lest we find ourselves harbouring hypocrisy like Judas. This Easter, consider the warning carefully, "...sin is crouching at your door" (Genesis 4:7). Do not settle for temporary pleasures that only lead down the path of a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8).

Prayer:

My LORD, I know how selfish my heart can tend to be. Please help me consider others better as you have commanded in your word. Help me to be a trustworthy ally to others. In Christ's name. Amen.
