Above all I seek You

In The Chosen, Matthew expresses his deep desire to understand Jesus — not only His teachings, but Jesus Himself. “Above all, I seek You!”

Scripture is always pointing to the fact that the deepest level of understanding is found in love, not knowledge. Just read the passage about the greatest commandment, or the words in 1 Corinthians. Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Everything else flows from this.

Radical love — that’s what Jesus models for us. The word radical comes from the Latin word for “root.” Radical love is love that grows from deep roots. It is anchored in God – His promises, His character, His will, and His deep involvement in your life.

That kind of love is not driven by circumstances or feelings. There are always reasons not to love. Disappointment, frustration, injustice, and hurt can easily take the lead. But Jesus didn’t let those reasons quench His love.

In Hebrews, we read that Jesus endured suffering because of “the joy set before Him.” He fixed His eyes on what God had promised – a family with many brothers and sisters. His love flowed from trust in the Father and commitment to the mission given to Him.

That is an example for every follower of Jesus. Hold on to His promises. Love. He showed you how — now follow Him.

• Do you seek to understand Jesus on a head level or a heart level? Why?
• Challenge: Memorize the greatest commandment. Write it down and place it somewhere you will see it often. How can you live it out today?
• What would it look like for your love to be more deeply rooted in God?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your incredible example. Thank You for Your love without measure. Thank You that You are radical — firmly rooted and faithful — and help me to follow You. Help me to be rooted in who You are. Plant me firmly in Yourself and help me reach out to the people around me. Lord, above all: I love You! Amen.
