Woes (S5 - E3)Sample

Who do you belong to?
Some questions are not really questions. They are traps.
In this passage, when the teachers of the law and the Pharisees ask Jesus if the people should pay taxes to Caesar, they think they’ve laid a clever trap.
Jesus handles them brilliantly — and in His response, He teaches an important lesson.
Jesus responds by asking for a coin.
Holding it up, He asks whose image and inscription appear on it. The answer is obvious: Caesar’s. The coin represents the authority of a human ruler. It is a human system, created and used by people.
Then Jesus gives His answer: “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.”
The statement does more than resolve the political question. It exposes something deeper.
The coin bears Caesar’s image. But human beings bear another image. From the beginning, Scripture teaches that people are created in the image of God. If the coin belongs to Caesar because it carries his image, then a greater question remains.
To whom do you belong?
Money, possessions, and systems of power all belong to the human world. They have value, but they are not ultimate. What matters more is the direction of the human heart.
Jesus’ words force that question into the open. Where is loyalty placed? What shapes decisions, priorities, and devotion?
Discipleship begins there. A disciple is a learner and a follower. To follow Jesus means recognizing that life ultimately belongs to the One who created it.
Give to people what belongs to people.
Give to God what belongs to God.
