Living From What Is Already Yours

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.” – 1 John 4:18a (NIV)

There is a difference between living toward security and living from it. Most of us know the first way well.

We arrange our lives so that we will finally feel safe, hoping the right relationships are in place, the finances are stable, the health is good, and the future feels manageable. And just when things begin to settle, there is usually one more concern that keeps us from fully resting.

John points us to something that breaks this cycle. Perfect love drives out fear. Not manages it, not suppresses it, but drives it out.

The love God has for you is not something you are still in the process of earning. It is not held back until you perform well enough. It has already been given.

When that love becomes the ground you stand on rather than the reward you are trying to reach, fear begins to lose its hold. You no longer need every circumstance to align before you can feel secure. The security you were searching for was already present in God’s love for you.

Learning to live from that truth takes time. We must return to it again and again, especially when anxiety whispers that we must do more in order to be safe. And, each time we return, we remember that God’s love has not moved and His care has not changed.

This is the quiet shift the Christian life invites us into: not striving to become secure, but learning to live from the security God has already given.

Prayer

Father, thank You that Your love is not something I must earn. Teach me to stand on what is already true rather than striving for what You have already given. When fear returns, bring me back to the security of Your love. Amen.
