Preparing for MarriageSample

Be Motivated to Serve One Another
Jesus modeled a life of service. He did not come to be served, but to serve. In the same way, marriage thrives when both people ask, “How can I serve you?”
One thing that helped me tremendously right from the beginning of our marriage was a heart-to-heart Elizabeth had with me. She pointed out that I’m not naturally affectionate. She even shared that she understood where that came from, why it wasn’t modeled for me growing up. But she lovingly made something clear: while that may explain it, it doesn’t excuse it.
She reminded me that she is the only one who can give me what I need from a wife, and I am the only man who can give her what she needs as her husband.
That conversation shifted something in me. It helped me realize that serving your spouse isn’t about doing what comes naturally, it’s about choosing what is necessary. It’s about stepping outside of your comfort zone to meet the needs of the one God has entrusted to you.
“Most foundationally, marriage is the doing of God. And ultimately marriage is the display of God.” — John Piper
When both individuals serve, no one is lacking. Love grows strongest in an environment of selflessness.
