Preparing for Marriage

DAY 8 OF 10

Understand God’s Design—One Flesh

Marriage is a covenant where two become one. This is more than physical; it is spiritual, emotional, and relational unity.

I once read that newlyweds often take a few years to stop thinking of themselves as two and truly start realizing they are one. I saw this show up in my own marriage, especially when it came to invitations. Early on, I would accept invitations to weddings, parties, and gatherings for both of us without even thinking to talk to Elizabeth first. In my mind, I was just saying yes, but in reality, I was making decisions as if I were still living a single life.

Marriage calls you into a new way of thinking. It’s no longer “me,” it’s “we.”

Learning to pause, communicate, and decide together is part of what builds unity. It’s not just about logistics; it’s about honoring each other and recognizing that your lives are now deeply connected.

“At the heart of mankind’s existence is the desire to be intimate and to be loved by another. Marriage is designed to meet that need for intimacy and love.” — Gary Chapman

God’s design is not separation, but deep connection. Your lives, decisions, and futures are joined together.

Respond to God’s Word:

How can you begin building unity in your relationship even before marriage?
