Marriage will reveal your character. It will stretch you and refine you. This is not a problem; it is part of God’s design.

Are you good at arguing? I know some people are. They can argue about anything. They’re trained to spot the flaws in the other person’s position and win the debate. But in marriage, you don’t want to win argument awards, because if you do, you may end up losing something far more important.

The goal isn’t to master pointing out your spouse’s issues. The goal is to get really good at addressing your own.

Marriage has a way of exposing what’s in your heart: your pride, your defensiveness, your impatience. And while it’s easy to focus on what your spouse is doing wrong, real growth begins when you take responsibility for your part.

You will need humility to admit when you’re wrong, grace to forgive, and character to choose what is right. Growth is essential for a healthy marriage, and it starts with you.
