DAY 6 OF 7

The Listening Advantage

A good coach studies before he shouts. He watches patterns. He reads body language. He understands timing. He doesn’t just react to what he sees in the moment; he considers what led up to it. That kind of awareness makes correction more effective and encouragement more meaningful. My Dad knew when to speak and when to observe. He didn’t react emotionally; he responded intentionally. There is a difference. Reaction is driven by impulse. Response is guided by wisdom. He understood that wisdom requires patience and that not every mistake deserves a microphone and not every frustration deserves a speech. In a world that rushes to judge, he paused to understand. He asked questions before drawing conclusions. He listened longer than he talked. No public shaming. Just clarity, accountability, and belief that growth was possible. That type of discipline is rare. This is how God coaches us. God does not shout at every misstep. He studies our hearts. He watches our patterns. He convicts gently before He corrects loudly. Through the Holy Spirit, He whispers, “That’s not who you are,” long before consequences speak. He allows us space to reflect. He asks questions in scripture that draw us to self-examination: “Where are you?” “Why are you afraid?” “Do you love Me?” He listens to our prayers, our frustration, our confusion, our repentance, even when our words are messy. The Bible shows a God Who listens. Psalm 34:15 says His ears are attentive to the cries of the righteous. Before He responds, He hears. Before He corrects, He understands. Even when we talk more than we listen, He remains patient. Jesus modeled this, too. When accused, He was often silent. When challenged, He asked questions. When confronted with sin, He paused before responding like when the woman caught in adultery was thrown before Him. He knelt. He wrote in the sand. He created space before speaking. And when He finally did speak, His words restored dignity: “Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.” That is coaching. That is good leadership.

Reflection:

Do I respond from emotion or from wisdom?

In what areas can I practice restraint?

Encouragement:

“Wisdom listens longer than it speaks.”

Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for the ability to guard our tongues. Thank You for showing us what restraint looks like and for modeling patience in the way You deal with us daily. Thank You for the examples You place in our lives that demonstrate calm strength, wisdom, and controlled speech. Teach us how to listen with empathy, not just to respond, but to truly understand. Help us hear what is being said and what is not being said. Slow down our reactions and quiet the urge to speak from emotion. Help us to be quick to listen and slow to speak, especially in moments when tension rises. Replace impulsiveness with discernment. Replace pride with humility. Replace defensiveness with understanding. Guard our mouths so that our words do not wound, but build. Let our speech reflect maturity, self-control, and peace. When correction is needed, help us deliver it with dignity. When silence is needed, give us the strength to hold it. When we are unsure what to say, bring Scripture to our remembrance. Let the Bible guide every play we run in our homes, in our leadership, in our lives and in our responses. In Jesus name,

Amen.

About this Plan

Coached by Character

Coached by Character is a 7 Day Devotional Playbook of Character, Faith and Leadership that reminds us that the true playbook is the Bible and the ultimate Coach is God. Through biblical truth and practical reflection, readers are challenged to build character, strengthen faith, and lead with integrity. Sometimes God places earthly coaches and mentors in our lives to help us walk out His plays but every winning strategy begins with Him.
