Real Talk

DAY 14 OF 20

Day 14: Why We Run to It

Scripture: John 10:10 (NIV)
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

Nobody starts a destructive habit because they want to destroy themselves. They start it because they're trying to feel something. Or stop feeling something. Or fill something that feels empty. Or escape something that feels too heavy.

Addiction usually starts as a solution. A way to deal with loneliness, stress, pain, boredom, or the pressure of trying to hold everything together. And for a while, it works. It numbs the thing or fills the gap or gives you a moment of relief.

But Jesus says the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. And what starts as relief slowly becomes a cage. The thing that was supposed to help starts taking more than it gives. And you end up more empty than when you started.

Jesus offers something different. Life to the full. Not a numbed-out version of life. Not a distracted version. Full life. The kind that actually satisfies. The kind that doesn't leave you needing the next hit to feel okay.

The reason the habit has power over you is because it's meeting a real need in a destructive way. The path forward isn't just stopping the behavior. It's finding what the behavior is trying to do and letting God meet that need in a way that actually works.

Reflect: What need is your struggle trying to meet? Comfort? Escape? Connection? Numbness? What would it look like to bring that need to God instead?

Today: Identify the need underneath the habit. Then bring that need to God directly. Ask Him to meet it in a way that doesn't cost you everything.
