Hope In Jesus

Today’s reading reminds us of three ways to find hope.

One, through the encouragement of scripture we may find hope (Romans 15:4). I remember some time ago I was talking to a person who felt that God will not forgive her. I asked her to read Zephaniah 3:17 and write down what she felt about each line of that verse. She replied, “thank you, I have found renewed energy!” The Bible instructs us and if we persevere we will be encouraged.

Two, God offers the world hope in Jesus (Romans 15:12). Sometimes Christians are criticized that we are claiming exclusivity. But Isaiah 11:10 says that this offer is made by God. Christians cannot take credit for it. God is saying I will bring hope from the root of Jesse. And later Jesus reveals to John in Revelation 22:16, “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendent of David, the bright morning star.”

Three, the power of the Holy Spirit fills us with hope (Romans 15:13). Often in hopeless situations we find it hard to experience joy and peace. When we think of the scenario around the time of Jesus’ birth, despite all the confusion the Angels declare ‘Do not fear, I bring you Joy.’ Now let’s turn our attention to the last thing Jesus tells his disciples, ‘Peace I leave with you and my peace I give to you.’ At the beginning and end is peace and joy. The Holy Spirit enables us to thrive in this hope.

Persevere in this hope.
