Hope In Jesus

Opportunities come our way. Some opportunities are good for us and others are bad. What we do with those opportunities determines our future. There are times we regret when such opportunities are missed. We realise that we should have grabbed what was presented to us.

Maybe what presented itself to you was something that could have made a drastic change to your current circumstances. Or maybe it was an opportunity that could have helped you come closer to the goal that you had set for yourself in the future. These were potential that could have been actualized in your life.

Jesus in this text is presenting himself as an opportunity. He says, “The light is among you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you.” Jesus here is saying, make the most of me. Let my light guide you out of your darkness. Whatever your darkness might be; a recurring sin or a temptation, a habit that results in feeling guilt or shame.

He offers you his assistance along life’s journey. Ananda, a disciple of the Buddha, approaches the ailing Buddha to ask him for advice concerning the future of Buddha’s disciples. He responds by saying, “Ananda, dwell making yourselves your island (support), making yourselves, not anyone else, your refuge; making the Dhamma your island (support), the Dhamma your refuge, nothing else your refuge.”

The weight of your duty is for you to bear. The guilt and the darkness that follows is also for you to bear. There is no support apart from his teachings. Jesus takes us one step further. He is not merely offering us his teachings as the light. Rather he is the light. Accepting his teaching is to accept him. And when you have accepted a person, his presence offers you guidance.

Believe in the light and become “sons of light.”
