Father’s Love: 30 Days of Discovering God as FatherSample

Day 15 – A Source of Identity
God is first and foremost your source of identity. Not the world, not your accomplishments, not your family, not your mistakes, not your education, and definitely not the lies of the devil. God is your source of identity. Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV), God says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born I set you apart, I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” He is the one that formed you, set you apart and even determined your destiny. This should absolutely free you from comparison syndrome!
I recently found out that I was born out of wedlock and unplanned. Something about that revelation hurt me especially since my father was absent and as much as I’ve tried, we still do not have a relationship. During my devotional time, I started saying, “Father, I may have been an accident to my parents, but I’m not an accident to you because you purposed for me to be here even before my parents met.” That statement shut down all feelings of rejection and abandonment the devil tried to bring in me.
You don’t have to accept a false identity today. God does not have accidents, and He doesn’t make mistakes. You are planned, you are needed, you have an assignment on your life. Whether your earthly father was amazing and present, or absent, your first source of identity begins with God. Maybe you’ve made mistakes, and been told, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” That is a lie. Allow God to rewrite your story today and show you who you are. The apple doesn’t have to fall far from the tree when that tree is Jesus! God cares so much about you knowing your identity that even for Jesus, God assured Him in Mark 1:11 (NIV) after His baptism saying, “And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
God is pleased with you. You are His child.
Write “I am God’s beloved child. God is my Daddy” on a sticky note and place it somewhere visible.
Read, internalize, and pray each scripture to deepen your faith.
