Lamentations is a long poem written by the prophet Jeremiah describing the woes of the Israelites when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed their city. Ezra, on the other hand, recounts their return to their homeland. In fact, it goes into meticulous detail enumerating the specific families and the number who returned to Jerusalem. This is a good place to remind ourselves that we are not just reading biblical literature; we are reading world history. Many of these events are also recorded in ancient documents and stone monuments. God’s hand has always been active in world history as well as our own personal histories if we have but eyes to see.
