ADDICTED
Lyrics:
I’m addicted to destruction it’s burnt into my bones
by a raging wildfire started long ago.
By a careless cigarette, I don’t know who to blame.
They simply lit the match, but it was I who fanned the flames.
I’m addicted to destruction like a river flowin’ free
and the longer that it runs the deeper it will be.
As the current takes away soil from the bed
it will keep on taking me ‘til I’m good and dead.
Chorus:
Oh I love what’s killing me, but I sure don’t want to die.
I’m addicted to destruction like the strongest wine.
It calls me from the bottle it calls me from the vine.
What started out as heaven in each and every cup
turned into muddy water the more that I drank up.
Bridge:
Either way I’m dead
Either way I’m dead
With or without it I’m dead
Me, I’m fighting off destruction like a showdown in the streets.
I’m quicker to the draw but my trigger finger’s weak.
And when the hammer falls and the other man goes down
I see I’ve shot a mirror and its broken on the ground.
Oh I love what’s killing me.
I love what’s killing me.
I love what’s killing me.
Themes: Addiction, Loving our sin, Struggling against sin.
Thoughts to consider as you listen and read through this study: Our addiction to destructive sinful behavior will eventually lead to death, both spiritual and physical. We must recognize that it wants to destroy us. We must be putting to death our sin before it becomes the end of us. This song also helps to set up the trajectory of this concept album. This whole album is about the community and family of God’s kingdom, and this second song reminds us that we are powerless in the world without the empowerment of Christ.
About this Plan
The Christian gospel is about a Holy Triune God making his home amongst a holy people in a renewed and redeemed creation. Jesus is all about folk and field. In this musical 10-day study from Garden City, you will follow the story of man once alone in sin and bad company. It tracks his journey into God's family on earth and in the kingdom yet to come.
