Matthew opens his eyewitness account of Jesus’s life with a list of Jesus’s Jewish ancestors. Matthew’s Gospel presents Jesus as the One who fulfilled the Old Testament prophesies, and this listed genealogy reaffirms that. God had promised the Messiah would be a descendant of Abraham, which we read come to pass in the birth of Jesus Christ to Mary. The name "Jesus" means "the Lord saves," reminding us of God’s ultimate plan in sending His Son to this earth. These chapters end with the powerful baptism of Jesus himself. Again, this is an important reminder of how we are to live our lives and follow the example of Jesus.
